Patan officialy Lalitpur is located about 5 km south of Kathmandu, just after the Bagmati River. Patan is one of 3 royal cities in the valley with Kathmandu and Bhaktapur. Patan (Lalitpur) is the most artistic and architectural centre of the valley due to the famous Patan Durbar Square, 55 major temples and 136 monasteries. Patan is also known for its tradition of arts and crafts.

In the north of Lalitpur are neighborhoods of Sanepa known to be occupied by many international associations and organizations, as well as expatriates. And Jhamsikhel popular for the number of cafes and restaurants that have been created in recent years. Some peoples call this area Jhamel an increasingly popular alternative to Thamel.
